I f you have decided on buying chickens, you should check at all sources available to you. As you may assume, there are number of species of chickens that you can buy.
Different species are bred for different purposes.
There are 3 broad categories:
- pure breeds
- egg laying hybrids
- mixed hybrids
Each species has its own quality. For instance, egg laying hybrids are very small in body size, but lay eggs more often then other species.
When buying chickens, always look for chicken breeder. And for any one. Ask around and look for reputable chicken breeder. Be sure to ask in your local community, as this is very friendly folks that will be more than happy to help.
When checking out chicken breeders, be sure to look at his livestock and chickens living conditions. Don’t buy any chickens if they look unhealthy. Even if the price is way lower then the competition.
There are some hatcheries where you can buy chickens online. Note that chickens are not shipped in winter. This causes long waiting lists on spring time, so be sure to book your chicken in time.
When choosing your chickens, make sure that they are active, extremely vocal and energetic. Also, their whole coat needs to be full of feathers, without any bold spots.
If you spot any illnesses, contact your breeder immediately!
Last, but not the least, remember that chickens will be very hungry and thirsty when arrive, so prepare them enough food and water.
